Chapter Five: Loving The Lies

And you know I see right through you/Cause the world gets in your way/What's the point in all this screaming /You're not listening anyway

Stars Hollow was like staying over at your grandparents while your parents were away. Homey, but not home. Hartford was like home. Comfortable, familiar, a sense of belonging. Unfortunately, it also represented the slight fact that she had to go to school very soon. Then again, not everything was perfect.

Lola looked down as something rubbed up against her bare feet. She squealed as she hefted the white Persian cat into her arms.

“Vennie darr-ling how I’ve missed you,” She buried her face into the cat’s fur. “You really must get over your hatred of Stars Hollow so you can come with me.

The cat yawned, its tongue rolling out of its mouth in a way that use to make Lola giggle, showing how interesting she found that particular idea to be. She let Venus down to the floor with a sigh.

Lola flicked her stereo on, a male folk singer from the days of old coming on. As she passed her answering machine, she played the messages.

“Lo, it’s Aurora. I know you’re in Heaven’s Hell, or whatever that place is called,” Her friend let out a melodramatic sigh. “But as soon as you get this message call me. You better be picking up the phone right now, DuGrey.”

Lola looked down at her empty hands and shrugged. The next message started.

“Lorelai, it’s Spring Delaney, my sources tell me Dev Mariano is back in town. I know you are a close friend, and stay in Hello’s Bellows. So call me if you want to confirm anything.”

Lola rolled her eyes as the machine beeped, signaling the end of her messages.

She sat down at her vanity and picked up the ivory colored phone beside her. She clicked on the fifth speed dial button and waited for the person to pick up.

“Aurora.”

“Lo.”

“Are you in the middle of my message?” Her friend with red-gold hair asked.

Lola leaned back in her chair, examining her reflection. “No. It ended a few minutes ago.”

“You never do as your told,” Aurora sighed. “What kind of friend are you?”

“A tired one. So what’s the tragedy?”

“Nothing really,” Lola could practically hear her friend shrug. “Just I was going through the Chilton Memory Book.”

“Oh Goddess,” Lola moaned.

Aurora continued on as if she hadn’t heard her, “And did you know how many Chiltonites ended up getting married?”

“No, tell me,” She encouraged her friend without any enthusiasm.

“Well from our parents class there was Madeline Lynn and Brad Langford, Summer Sheffield and Austin Delaney,” Aurora paused to take a breath. “My parents and of course yours. Do they still count though?”

"Probably not, my parents may have met in high school, but it was when they re-met in college is when they fell in love," Lola scoffed as she examined her nails. "How cliché is that?"

Aurora laughed, “Yes well, continuing on. Now Paris Geller and Louise Grant are different stories. Their spouses are from Hell’s Halo,” Aurora pointed out. “Granted, Louise and Dean fell in love during college.”

“Stars Hollow,” Lola corrected her as Venus jumped into her lap. “Does this have to do with anything?”

“No, filler,” Aurora replied. “Besides I just wanted to know how to approach the little subject of Dallas Mariano living with you?”

In an uncharacteristic show of emotion Lola jumped up, unwittingly dropping Venus to the floor and knocking her phone over. “What are you talking about?”

“Well since Dallie doesn’t have his license, it’s going to be awfully hard for him to get back to school from Stars’ Heaven, er Hollow, whatever. So your father offered to let him stay at your house.”

Lola righted her phone and attempted to sooth Venus. “I never heard anything about it.”

“My house keeper heard it from yours,” Aurora stated matter-of-factly.

Venus hissed at her, so Lola gave us and wished she could hiss herself. “I got to go then. See you later Aura.”

“Bye Lo.”

Lola hung up the phone before stomping out of her room. “Dad! Daddy!”

“Bellowing does not become you, my dear,” Dallie stepped into her line of vision at the bottom of the stairs.

“I thought you were staying with Luke,” She said, her voice lowering as she came down the stairs.

“Yes well, Jess and Tristan talked and decided since I was without license they felt that I would be better off staying in Hartford, where you could drive me to school.”

“What kind of loser doesn’t have a license by seventeen?” Lola growled. “And besides, you won’t like my car…the doors manually lock.”

Dallie arched an eyebrow, arms akimbo, “That’s the only thing you can find wrong with it?”

“It’s not my fault I have excellent taste in cars,” Lola was reduced to pouting. And to think her father was her favorite parent too. Still was, considering she had run out of options.

Dallie sighed, “Look, Lo, I’m no happier than you are about this arrangement. But it’s for only a short while, and your father’s house is huge. I doubt we’ll ever have to see each other, much less be aware of each other’s presence here.”

Somehow she doubted that.
