Chapter Ten: Coming Back To You

And here's a letter from the real world I don't expect you'll reply/ And anything you're gonna tell me is just another lie.

There was some awful shaking going on. If she didn’t live in New England she’d probably think it was an earthquake or something. Which is why she should be rather worried by the motion. Ah well, she was never a morning person to begin with.

“Lola,” Someone was speaking to her. “Lo.” The evil person was trying to wake her. Hell and damnation you’d think they’d know by now that she never wanted to be wakened. “Lorelai Emily.”

She finally pried one eye open to see her father sitting on the edge of her bed. He looked rather amused. “You’re mother always did say you were almost as bad as your grandmother when it came to waking you.”

“Then why did you bother to try?” Lola groaned, closing her eyes again.

Tristan patted her shoulder, “You have school today, and I wanted to make sure you’ve recovered from your fever. Have you?”

She opened both eyes this time. “If I say no, can I go back to sleep?”

“Depends on what the doctor says when he sees you,” Tristan replied.

She sighed, rolling onto her back. “What time is it?”

“You got forty-five minutes to ready yourself,” He replied, he bent down to kiss her on the forehead. “Don’t forget you’re in charge of bringing Dallie to and from school.”

“Okay.”

“And tomorrow your mother is stopping by for supper,” Tristan patted her on the shoulder once more and made his way to her room.

“Lovely.”

Thalia Haze stifled a yawn with the back of her hand as Dallas Mariano finished outlining the last issue they had done, before spring break. She loved Dallie, she truly did. They had been friends ever since kindergarten, but hell it was after school. She wanted to get this over with and get out. Her eye swept discreetly around the room. Her boyfriend, Ethan Langford, sat beside her, literally doodling in his notebook, Aurora Thomas was going through her purse and comparing nail polishes under the table, Spring Delaney was checking Dallie out for what had to be the fifth meeting in a row, Breklin James was tapping his pen against the table, and even their editor was in the back, typing on her computer, looking up every few moments and nodding at what Dallie was saying. The only person blatantly ignoring him was Lorelai Emily DuGrey, who had her feet propped up on her book bag and was filing her nails.

Thalia could tell the moment Dallie noticed what Lola was doing. “Lola.”

Lola didn’t even look up from her nails, “Dallie.”

“Are you even listening to me?” Dallie crossed his arms across his chest and glared at her.

The Franklin a very old and very distinguished paper, er, newspaper and if we don’t improve then we won’t be any better than The National Enquirer. Not to mention that if we keep writing like we do the closest we’ll get to working for the New York Times is when sell it at our newspaper stands,” Lola mimicked, setting down her nail file and leaning forward.

“I did not say that,” he argued, setting his hands down to clasp the edge of the table and glared at Lola.

Actually he did, but Thalia wasn’t about to help out Lola DuGrey anytime soon.

“Ya did too,” Lola propped her chin in her hands. “Because you say it at the beginning of every Franklin meeting.”

He was gritting his teeth now, “That does not excuse you not listening, Lola.”

“Why must I when you keep being so damned repetitive?” Lola countered.

“Miss DuGrey,” Mrs. Peters admonished from in back of the room.

The room filled with tense silence after Mrs. Peters’ warning, and as Lola and Dallie attempted to stare each other down. As if daring the other to pick the fight up again. Thalia noted that everyone had given up on his or her own personal distraction to watch the pair show down. A fight like this between them usually only happened at the beginning of the school year.

Lola arched an eyebrow, “Shouldn’t you be getting back to your meeting, my repetitious darling?”

His face darkened, “You’re going to have to beg me to get a good assignment now, DuGrey.”

“Always knew you wanted me on my knees,” She shot back.

Dallie clenched his jaw while some of the staff coughed into their hands.

“Miss DuGrey, Mr. Mariano, do I have to take over this meeting?” Mrs. Peters questioned. “Please cease the innuendos and vulgarity and wrap up this meeting.”

Dallas sighed in defeat, “Your only assignment today, it seems, is to think of a new class the students would like. It seems like they’d like to add some more choices next year, and we’ll meet tomorrow to discuss it and hand out Franklin assignments.” The staff remained in their seats, their eyes stealing a look at Lola. “It means you’re dismissed. You can go home now.”

And like that they scrambled out of their chairs and departed. Apparently spring break hadn’t changed anything at all, it was just another day at Chilton Prep. School.
